Welcome to Fellowship Bible Institute. I am your teacher Bill Reeves. We are starting a 24 session class we will have throughout the year. Visit our web page at fbcjoliet.com and scroll down to the Bible Institute to pick up class syllabus which I am going to change from a twelve week schedule to a 24 week. If you can visit us at 6:30 PM on Monday Nights at 122 Morris Joliet, Il. Syllabus for Traveling with the Apostles, Study of the Book of Acts with Rev. Bill Reeves Our study of Acts will be an unusual class and give you a lot of options for your study. This study is your study. I will try to provide different ways to study the course. You will get the most out of the class based on your experience and ability. First, I want everybody to read through the book of Acts during the class. Reading Acts is the most important thing that I want you to do. You will be reading 13% of the New Testament. The reading schedule below includes about 85 verses a week. That generally is about 2 1/2 chapters a week. I paid attention to the paragraphs, and reading a Bible that gives you sections is essential. Getting a big idea from each paragraph is one of the first skills of inductive Bible study. Finding the big picture takes practice, practice, practice. The encouraging thing is you will get good at it. For myself, I am reading Dr. Dwight Pentecost book A study of transition in the book of Acts, Dr. Swindoll Living Insights in Acts. In the Syllabus, follow the schedule of reading the text and Dr. Swindoll's commentary. You can substitute recommended commentaries to fit the weekly goals. I will share insights from Swindoll's work in class, but your homework can be another commentary instead. There are many online resources to give significant aid to your study. Highlight insights and questions you may have for class. One of the things I want to do in class is to have you experienced locations in the book of Acts. I believe this can give you great insight as we travel through the 1st-century world of Acts. Having a historical background with maps and charts will help you for years to come in the backgrounds of the NT letters. In a world filled with unbelief, we can look and answer all locations and get insights from real people found in the Bible. I think it is a great way to study the book of Acts. We will travel with them. In my walk with Jesus, studies in the gospels understanding their travels on foot gave us a layer of analysis that put us there on the scene. A sidebar at the time was the importance of walking in our own life. In Acts, they both walked great distances and sailed. Once again, it can encourage us to include moving in our lives. More importantly, God has a mission for us to do. He is still working in our life. To aid us, I have collected many photographs and videos to give us a Birdseye view. Extra credit read Dwight Pentecost New Wine A study of Transition in the Book of Acts And receive one grade level higher. Suppose you decide to use this text to follow the study; that would be wonderful. Dr. Pentecost gives a theological analysis of Acts that is outstanding. Extra credit with a rise in a Letter grade, Read the Gospel of Luke. Luke & Acts are 27% of the New Testament with 2,158 verses. Acts have 1,007 verses (13%) in English, and Luke has 1,151 verses (14%). Reading them together will begin your study of the Biblical Theology of Luke. Luke's association with Paul in developing a Biblical Theology is enormous. Several scholars miss this. Paul was Luke's Top source, but not the only one. I will be posting videos for online students. Lesson 1 Online class 1a class 1b 1:1-2:16 Reading a translation with paragraphs - NKJV, NIV, Holman Christian Standard, Net Bible, You may have a NASB that indicates paragraphs by bold letters. Paragraph reading increases comprehension. You can choose an inductive method of study for your commentary. Irving Jensen is a good guide you can get on Amazon. Inductive study is not lazy or careless reading; follow the principles from Oletta Wald's book The Joy of Discovery which you can get on Amazon. A gold mine of a book. You can choose a commentary from Charles Swindoll, J Vernon McGee, Thomas Constable. For example, I could suggest good short commentaries that would cut out some of the reading but offer good depth to explore the book. But if you have the time go for it. I have no doubt a lot of Pastors and missionaries would love this class. Posted here is Swindoll's Living Insights New Testament Commentary.
